The guts and bones of a novel.A novel is like a body, where every word is a cell that can create something beautiful. Today was the first day of Genius Hour, a 60 minute period where students work on their individual/group projects. My project is to write the first two chapters of a novel. The novel will be about Chloe, a newly orphaned 15-year-old girl, after her mother's unfortunate death. chloe must learn to adapt to a new situation while living with uncle's and meddling cousin's. Today I mostly worked on chapter names and preparing for other non-story parts of the book. I also wrote out the beginning of the first chapter. ChallengesLike all writers I was faced with challenges. My challenges were mostly wording a sentence the right way and focusing on writing. Another problem was trying to figure out a way to transition from one scene into another, thinking into the future I'll have to find a way to transition from chloe crying to telling more information about the aspects her circumstances. Another challenge was I have never written a novel before, there for I don't know what all is required for this task. SolutionsIn life when one is faced with challenges they must find solutions. A solution I found for wording would be a thesaurus and the opinions of the people around me (mom). As for transitions I have already thought of ways to this smoothly, I can also look to other novels and see how their authors transition from situation to situation without creating a separate paragraph. Looking to other novels has also helped with learning some of the requirements of a novel. TakeawaysOne of the takeaways for today would be that I should plan before I execute. It has been expressed to me that planing or having a rough draft is better than diving into writing. During the planing process it would be wise to figure out a word count, structure and what all I'm going to be putting into a paragraph.
