An amateur's second attempt at writing.Yesterday was the first of the second week of Genius hour. As usual I worked on details of the first part of the first chapter in the novel. Now I am working on a second situation which includes a back story, it basically gives some information and tells how chloe ended up in this current situation. ChallengesA challenge that I faced was wording the story in a away that made the text transfer into a different setting well. This challenge included rewording and adding few little new details to the text. The new is to figure out what to put into the story next, I have a few ideas of what the novel will contain in it's first chapter, but I haven't quite fully plained on how or what all is going to be written in the first chapter. Other than these the typical problems were vocabulary and staying focused. SolutionsA solution I made for transferring text would be to end the original setting in a good place and place three dots in a row under the text, so that a new setting can be told without changing paragraphs. As usual I also looked to another book to see what their author did for this problem. One last solution for the day would be to write the rough and the when typing express it more formal manner, weather I will use solution or not it is a good tip that was expressed to me that I am now referring to the writers that may be reading this. TakeawaysOne Takeaway from today would be to "not worry so much about wording sense it's just a rough draft ( Matthew Barker). As well as to more on the book itself, I have 12 weeks to get this book done and "praised". By praised I mean for someone to read it and and quote about it for the acknowledgment pages, this step is not necessary but it would be fun to see what people think of my novel, if I need to make any changes before I read to a larger audience. Read about itI have decided to start posting little bits of the novel in hopes that someone might enjoy it.
Chapter 1: The effort it took to keep her sobs quiet drained all the energy she had left. Jet-lagged and frazzled Chloe climbed into her new bed and fell asleep, she had no dreams. The guts and bones of a novel.A novel is like a body, where every word is a cell that can create something beautiful. Today was the first day of Genius Hour, a 60 minute period where students work on their individual/group projects. My project is to write the first two chapters of a novel. The novel will be about Chloe, a newly orphaned 15-year-old girl, after her mother's unfortunate death. chloe must learn to adapt to a new situation while living with uncle's and meddling cousin's. Today I mostly worked on chapter names and preparing for other non-story parts of the book. I also wrote out the beginning of the first chapter. ChallengesLike all writers I was faced with challenges. My challenges were mostly wording a sentence the right way and focusing on writing. Another problem was trying to figure out a way to transition from one scene into another, thinking into the future I'll have to find a way to transition from chloe crying to telling more information about the aspects her circumstances. Another challenge was I have never written a novel before, there for I don't know what all is required for this task. SolutionsIn life when one is faced with challenges they must find solutions. A solution I found for wording would be a thesaurus and the opinions of the people around me (mom). As for transitions I have already thought of ways to this smoothly, I can also look to other novels and see how their authors transition from situation to situation without creating a separate paragraph. Looking to other novels has also helped with learning some of the requirements of a novel. TakeawaysOne of the takeaways for today would be that I should plan before I execute. It has been expressed to me that planing or having a rough draft is better than diving into writing. During the planing process it would be wise to figure out a word count, structure and what all I'm going to be putting into a paragraph.
